Our Dogs

Our History

The name Owen Care comes from our first Service Dog named Owen, a Labrador Retriever known for his active, patient, sweet, and playful nature, coupled with a love for tennis balls and cold water.

Throughout his lifetime, Owen brought joy, comfort, and a sense of security to his owner (also known as a handler) and hundreds of children and young adults with different disabilities in group settings. His versatile skill set included object retrieval, providing stability, offering tactile stimulation, administering deep pressure therapy, and alerting in medical situations.

Owen, alongside his owner and handler, also actively engaged in outreach and educational initiatives and conducted classes to raise awareness about diversity and inclusion in schools, institutions, businesses, and universities. Owen also played a vital role in various projects advocating for updates to accessibility laws.

His warmth and affection won the hearts of everyone he encountered, leaving an indelible mark. For this reason,

It is with immense pride that Owen Care carries his name as a tribute to his legacy.

Our Dogs

Most of our service dogs are Labrador Retrievers.

Owen Care collaborates with a globally recognized Labrador and Golden Retriever breeder named Manuel Queijeiro, who is known for following and ensuring the highest international breeding practices that prioritize the well-being of the dogs. Manuel Queijeiro is also an all-breed international judge approved to officiate at CACIB shows worldwide.

Owen Care dogs are characterized by specific genetic predispositions, temperament, physical attributes, and personalities that maximize their success and longevity in performing their duties as service dogs.

Service dogs play a crucial role in safeguarding the lives of their handlers. This is why each dog at Owen Care undergoes a rigorous 22-month individualized training program meticulously designed to cater to the unique needs of their future handlers. Once a service dog is placed with their handlers, Owen Care maintains constant communication, ensuring not only the well-being of the recipient but we continue to monitor the dog's mental and physical well-being throughout its lifetime.
